Renaissance Pleasure Faire / May 29-30-31 (screenprinted poster)

Malibu: Paramount Ranch, 1965. Original promotional poster, measuring 35 x 22.5 inches, screenprinted in red, lavender, and silver on a black ground.

Striking promotional poster designed by Earl Newman for the 1965 Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Malibu, a fundraiser for listener-sponsored radio station KPFK. The Renaissance Pleasure Faires were some of the first Renaissance fairs in the United States, attracting a countercultural crowd: “Amid the Vietnam War, inhabiting a lost era of courtly love and gentler combat had tremendous appeal, and the fair became a kind of early, wimpled Woodstock" (New York Times). Newman's design depicts a stylized pair of Renaissance revelers: a young woman playing a lute beside a jester shaking a tambourine. A prolific California printmaker for more than half a century, Newman is best known for his iconic images of folk and jazz musicians, epitomized by his poster series for the Monterey Jazz Festival. A fine example of Newman's early work.
