Original gag cartoon for Collier’s magazine
No place: 1956. Ink, wash, and opaque white on paper, measuring 6.5 x 8.5 inches, sight size. Signed “W. Steig” in black ink, lower right image. Framed with archival glass to 14 x 15.5 inches, clear sleeve on verso containing the original typed description label requesting return to Steig’s New Jersey residence, with a photocopy of the 1/23/56 submission date behind it.
Original gag cartoon by William Steig, published in Collier’s magazine on May 11, 1956. Flipping the script on the trope of the tipsy husband sneaking home after hours, Steig depicts a man tiptoeing through his front door, about to discover his smiling wife passed out on the sofa, clutching a second bottle after presumably emptying the one on the coffee table. Hailed as “The King of Cartoons,” Steig mastered the wordless single-panel cartoon at magazines including The New Yorker, Judge, Collier’s and Look. Today he is best remembered as the author and illustrator of the Caldecott-winning Sylvester and the Magic Pebble (1970), Shrek! (1990), and other acclaimed picture books for children.
