Nineteenth-century carved bone alphabet
England: nineteenth century. Complete bone alphabet, each carved letter measuring about ¾ of an inch high. Housed in contemporary wooden box with sliding lid, measuring 5.25 x 1.75 x 1.5 inches. Small loss to serif of letter “F.”.
Carved bone alphabet, a popular educational toy of the Victorian era, housed in a portable hardwood box. The set consists of all twenty-six capital letters, and likely represents a merger of two alphabets, as some letters are very slightly larger in scale than others. Sets like these were used to teach young children their ABCs and the very simplest spelling exercises. An appealingly tactile survival.
