Stories from the Chap-Book; with: New Stories from the Chap-Book

Chicago: Herbert S. Stone & Company, 1896, 1898. Two octavo volumes, measuring 6.75 x 4 inches: [6], 5-241, [5], [8]; [6], 3-260, [2]. Original color-lithographed pictorial cloth, top edges gilt. Title of Stories printed in red and black; publisher’s catalogue dated October 1896 at rear. Title of New Stories printed in red and black; publisher’s vignette hand-colored. Light shelfwear and smudging to cloth bindings.

First editions of these anthologies of stories published in The Chap-Book, “bound in an entirely new and startling fashion” in boldly color-lithographed cloth. Editor Herbert S. Stone and his partner Ingalls Kimball began publishing as undergraduates at Harvard, and founded their independent Chicago press in 1894; Stone later took over the firm. Their ambitious little magazine The Chap-Book focused on new writing by mostly American authors, “the best tendencies of the younger writers of the day.” These anthologies of short fiction feature E.A. Borie’s image of a woman reading on the cover of the first, and Claude Bragdon’s portrait of a sandwich-board man advertising The Chap-Book on the sequel. A very good first edition set, in striking poster-inspired bindings.
