Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1969. Oblong octavo, measuring 5.5 x 8 inches: . Original buff card wrappers printed with wood type in orange and brown. Black-and-white illustrations throughout text. Light offsetting to wrappers.
First trade edition of this ABC book illustrated by schoolchildren on the Kettle Point Indian Reserve in southwestern Ontario, designed by Allan Fleming. Working collaboratively, the young students produced an image to illustrate each letter: “What was fascinating was that some of the kids no longer remembered who had done what picture. So they knew who'd been involved in the project, but except for one illustration that actually had a little boy's name on it, who knew [who created] the rest of them?” (Edwards and Saltman, Picturing Canada). First published as a Christmas keepsake in 1968, Alphabet Book was named one of the 50 Books of the Year by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) when it was reissued in this 1969 trade edition. A near-fine copy.
