Twentieth-century edition of English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s 1851 poem of the Risorgimento. Deeply sympathetic to the Italian cause, the Brownings witnessed the revolutionary struggle from the Florentine house they shared: “from Casa Guidi windows, we / Beheld the armament of Austria flow / Into the drowning heart of Tuscany.” This decorative edition was printed by the firm of Giulio Giannini, who specialized in attractive souvenirs of Italy for English tourists abroad; the illustrations are the work of his son, Giulio Giannini, Jr. A fine example of an ephemeral production, bound in patterned Florentine paper, bearing the stamp of Casa Guidi.
