Stratford-upon-Avon: The Trustees and Guardians of Shakespeare's Birthplace, 1964. Tall octavo, original ivory paper boards stamped in gilt with portrait of Shakespeare. Corrigenda slip tipped in. Boards lightly rubbed.
First edition, special issue in boards, number 61 of 100 copies, published simultaneously with the more common issue in wrappers. Introduction by Patrick Garland, John Lehmann, and William Plomer. In 1964, the Arts Council of Great Britain commissioned this collection of modern poems to celebrate the four hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. Contributors include Edmund Blunden, Thom Gunn, Randall Jarrell, Thomas Kinsella, W.D. Snodgrass, and Derek Walcott, who reimagines Othello: “Shriek, augury! His earth bulk / buries her bosom in its slow eclipse. / His smoky hand has charred / that marble throat! Bent to her lips, / he is Africa, a vast, sidling shadow / that halves the world with doubt." A near-fine copy.
