Shaker Lane

New York: Viking Kestrel, (1987). Oblong quarto, original color pictorial paper boards, tan endpapers, original unclipped color pictorial dust jacket. Color illustrations on every page. Light edgewear to dust jacket.

First edition of the Provensens’ account of a scrappy local community displaced to make way for suburban development, based on their own experience in upstate New York: “For over thirty-five years, we have watched the vast changes that are taking place, profoundly altering the look and feel of our rural landscape.” Alice and Martin Provensen collaborated on more than fifty books for children, providing illustrations for a number of Golden Books (most notably Margaret Wise Brown’s The Color Kittens) and for Nancy Willard’s A Visit to William Blake’s Inn, which won the Newbery Award in 1982. They also wrote and illustrated their own books, including the 1984 Caldecott winner The Glorious Flight. A near-fine copy of a moving book.

Price: $35.00
