The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby

London: Chapman and Hall, 1865. Octavo, three-quarter brown calf over marbled boards, raised bands, red and black morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, spine ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges stained red. Two volumes bound in one, half titles present, pictorial frontispiece in each volume, text printed in two columns. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Joints and edges lightly rubbed, light occasional foxing.

Handsomely bound edition of Dickens’ popular picaresque novel, the story of a resourceful boy who sets out to save his penniless family, first published serially in 1838-39: “Most men unconsciously judge the world from themselves, and it will be very generally found that those who sneer habitually at human nature, and affect to despise it, are among its worst and least pleasant samples.” This later edition features two of the original illustrations by Hablot Knight Browne, better known as “Phiz,” as frontispieces to each volume; the others are not included. A very good copy of an early Dickens classic.

Price: $250.00
