Modern illustrated edition of The Gift of the Magi, featuring watercolors by the Austrian artist Lisbeth Zwerger. Written at the bar of Pete’s Tavern in New York City, O. Henry’s 1905 story of a poor young husband and wife who plan to surprise each other on Christmas remains a holiday classic. “Jim had not yet seen his beautiful present. She held it out to him eagerly upon her open palm. The dull precious metal seemed to flash with a reflection of her own bright and ardent spirit. ‘Isn't it a dandy, Jim? I hunted all over town to find it.’” In 1990, illustrator Lisbeth Zwerger won the Hans Christian Andersen medal in recognition of her “lasting contribution to children's literature.” A fine copy.
