New York: The Odyssey Press, 1965. Small oblong volume, measuring 3.5 x 5.5 inches, original printed pictorial paper boards, original clipped color pictorial dust jacket. Musical score, accompanied by color illustrations.
First trade edition of Ben Shahn's strikingly illustrated edition of this traditional English Christmas carol, following the 1956 limited edition produced by the Museum of Modern Art: “Sweet was the song the virgin sung / When she to Bethlehem was come, / And was delivered of her son." The final page bears a printed dedication to the artist Bernarda Bryson Shahn, Ben Shahn's second wife, and the mother of three of his children. A fine copy.
