Modern illustrated edition of Laurence Sterne's A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy, first published in 1768: “There is not a more perplexing affair in life to me than to set about telling any one who I am, for there is scarce any body I cannot give a better account of than myself; and I have often wish'd I could do it in a single word and have an end of it." Although Dr. Johnson famously dismissed Tristram Shandy as too “odd" to last, Sterne's formally inventive comic narratives had great influence on modern novelists, most notably James Joyce. A near-fine copy.
