Modern design binding of red cloth lettered in silver gilt over grey pictorial paper boards hand-painted with a bird motif, red endpapers. Christmas 1940 gift inscription in English to front free endpaper. Illustrated with eight color plates by Élisabeth Ivanovsky.

Early printing of this brightly illustrated volume in publisher Desclée de Brouwer's Histoire Naturelle series, first published in 1938. Nine birds are featured: the swallow, nightingale, blue titmouse and garden warbler (as a pair), goldfinch, sparrow, golden oriole, gold-crest, and bullfinch. Each bird receives its own French verse, and is captioned in Latin, French, English and Dutch. The brilliantly colored illustrations are by Russian-born painter Élisabeth Ivanovsky. Text in French. A fine copy, rebound by Celine Lombardi in brightly hand-painted paper boards.
