New York: Doubleday, 1994. Single volume, measuring 11.5 x 10 inches; . Original color pictorial paper boards, original unclipped color pictorial dust jacket, color pictorial endpapers. Full-page color illustrations throughout text. Signed by Peter Sis on front flyleaf with sketch of a cat. Barely perceptible creasing to top edge of jacket.
Signed first edition of Czech emigré Peter Sis’s dreamlike tribute to the city of his childhood, written to give his American-born daughter a sense of the magic of Prague: “one day you will enter Prague, the place I grew up, in your silent slippers soft as cat’s paws, and you will look for the keys. Maybe. If you find the keys, unlock the mystery of Prague very, very slowly.” A three-time Caldecott Honor recipient, Sis won the Hans Christian Andersen Award, considered the “Nobel Prize for children’s literature,” in 2012. A near-fine example of a beautiful book, signed by Sis with a sketch of a cat.
